We have now lived with Basement Fridge for a week.  Here’s an update of our status as a family with a fridge in the basement.

-Back Porch Fridge has now become Back Porch Freezer.  The temperatures are dropping to below zero at night.  We left the milk on the porch.  It’s basic science.  Needless to say, the milk froze.

-We survived a blizzard without a refrigerator in our kitchen.  Amazing!

-Last night, while making dinner and bringing things up the eleven steps from Basement Fridge, then going back down and up again to get things we forgot, then going down and up again to put things away, then going down and up again to get things out that got put away that we weren’t done with, and finally going back down and up again to put everything away, Gracie, who is 9 declares…

“Mom, you will call the refrigerator repair man tomorrow.  I cannot live with this anymore!”

Elizabeth responded that she was getting kind of used to it and that she wasn’t sure she really wanted to call the repair man anymore.  She even shared that she has some ideas for repurposing the broken refrigerator still sitting in the kitchen.  One of her ideas was storage for bills and paperwork and small kitchen appliances.

I’m pretty sure that is the first step to becoming a hoarder.

-We have eaten out 4 times in the eight days of Basement Fridge.  So far, nothing too noble has come of this experience.  Sometimes we do keep the basement door open with the basement light on, as if it is just another room in our house.  I think the basement is starting to feel like it is a part of the family.
